How to Forward Your Business Calls to an AI Receptionist (Every Major Carrier)

Short answer: you keep your existing business number and forward it to the number your AI receptionist gives you. On most U.S. mobile carriers you dial a short code from your phone:

  • Verizon: *72 plus the number.
  • AT&T and T-Mobile: **21* plus the number, then #.

To have the AI answer only when you don't pick up, use conditional forwarding codes instead. The details for each carrier are below.

First, choose a forwarding strategy

StrategyWhat happensBest for
Forward all callsEvery call goes straight to the AIYou never want to pick up yourself, or you're testing
Forward when unanswered (no-answer / busy)Your phone rings first; if you don't answer, the AI doesOwners who want to take calls when they can
After-hours onlyA schedule forwards calls outside business hoursOffices with a front desk during the day

Most small businesses start with forward when unanswered. You lose nothing, because you still take every call you can. The AI catches the ones that would have gone to voicemail. Since most callers won't leave a voicemail, these are usually the calls you would otherwise lose for good.

Before you start

  1. Get your AI receptionist's number. In BlueSales, every Blue is assigned a phone number in Dashboard → Phone Numbers. Pick one in your area code. The plans include free numbers.
  2. Write the number down as 10 digits, for example 5125550123.
  3. Check that call forwarding is enabled on your plan. It's standard on almost all U.S. mobile and business lines, but some prepaid plans charge for it or disable it.

Verizon (mobile)

ActionDial
Forward all calls*72 + 10-digit number, then call
Forward only when busy or unanswered*71 + 10-digit number, then call
Turn forwarding off*73, then call

You'll hear a confirmation tone, or the call will connect briefly. Hang up and test from another phone.

AT&T (mobile)

AT&T uses the standard GSM codes:

ActionDial
Forward all calls**21* + 10-digit number + #
Forward when unanswered**61* + 10-digit number + #
Forward when busy**67* + 10-digit number + #
Forward when unreachable (off / no signal)**62* + 10-digit number + #
Forward all conditional (unanswered + busy + unreachable)**004* + 10-digit number + #
Turn off all forwarding##002#

Tip: set how long it rings first. Add the number of seconds, from 5 to 30 in steps of 5, to the no-answer code: **61* + number + **20# rings for 20 seconds before forwarding.

T-Mobile (mobile)

T-Mobile also uses the GSM codes. Include the country code 1 before the number:

ActionDial
Forward all calls**21*1 + 10-digit number + #
Forward when unanswered**61*1 + 10-digit number + #
Forward when busy**67*1 + 10-digit number + #
Forward when unreachable**62*1 + 10-digit number + #
Turn off all forwarding##002#

iPhone and Android settings

You can also forward from the phone's settings rather than dialing codes. These menus usually forward all calls; use the carrier codes above for conditional forwarding.

  • iPhone: Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Forwarding (on older iOS versions, Settings → Phone → Call Forwarding). Works on GSM carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile. On Verizon, use the codes.
  • Android: Phone app → ⋮ → Settings → Calls / Supplementary services → Call forwarding. The menu names vary by manufacturer.

Business landlines

Most traditional business landlines in the U.S. use:

ActionDial
Forward all calls*72, wait for the dial tone, then the 10-digit number
Turn forwarding off*73

Conditional forwarding ("busy/no-answer") on landlines usually has to be switched on by your provider. Call their business support line and ask for "call forward busy / no answer" to your AI number.

VoIP and cloud phone systems

On RingCentral, Zoom Phone, Dialpad, 8x8, Nextiva, Grasshopper, Ooma and similar systems, forwarding is set in the admin portal rather than by dialing codes. Look for:

  • Call handling / answering rules / call flow: add the AI receptionist's number as a forwarding destination or an "external number".
  • Business hours vs after-hours rules: most systems let you send after-hours calls somewhere different, which is ideal for an after-hours-only setup.
  • Ring groups: add the AI number as the last step, after your staff's phones have rung for 15–20 seconds.

Once calls forward correctly, the AI receptionist sees the caller's original number on most systems, so callbacks and caller records stay accurate.

Test it

  1. Call your business number from a phone that isn't the one you forwarded.
  2. For conditional forwarding, let it ring or decline the call, and confirm the AI picks up.
  3. Ask the AI a real question and try booking an appointment.
  4. Check the call log in your dashboard: you should see the call with a transcript.
  5. Test after hours too, if you set a schedule.

Alternatives to forwarding

  • Use the AI's number directly. Put the AI receptionist's number on your website, Google Business Profile or ads. This is useful for tracking calls from a specific campaign.
  • Port your number. Moving your number to a new provider takes days and is harder to undo. Forwarding gets you the same result in minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my existing business number with an AI receptionist?

Yes. You forward your existing number to the AI receptionist's number. Customers keep dialing the number they already have, and nothing on your website, truck or business cards changes.

How do I make the AI answer only when I miss a call?

Use conditional forwarding. On Verizon, dial *71 plus the AI number. On AT&T and T-Mobile, dial **61* plus the number plus # for unanswered calls, or **004* plus the number plus # to cover unanswered, busy and unreachable calls together.

How do I turn call forwarding off?

On Verizon and most landlines, dial *73. On AT&T and T-Mobile, dial ##002# to cancel every forwarding rule at once.

Does call forwarding cost extra?

Usually not. Call forwarding is included on almost all U.S. postpaid mobile and business phone plans. Some prepaid plans charge per minute for forwarded calls, so check with your carrier.

Will the AI see the original caller's number?

On most carriers and phone systems, yes. Forwarded calls normally pass the original caller ID through, so the AI receptionist logs who called and can follow up.
